Price Gouging and WIC 2

Yesterday I took my WIC voucher that included on it a 16 oz loaf of 100% whole wheat bread to Walmart. I looked on the shelf and there was my 16 oz package of whole grain bread, priced at $1.98. Right below it was the exact same brand and type of whole grain bread in a 20 oz loaf. This loaf was priced at $1.39. Even though it would save the government (and the tax payer) money and give our family more food, I have to use my voucher to buy the more costly smaller loaf of bread. continue reading »

Despite a popular misconception, WIC is for more than unwed teen moms. All that matters to the WIC office is your household income and household size, and that you have a child under 5 years old (or are pregnant). Some people who delay or selectively vaccinate think they will be turned away, but vaccination doesn’t affect eligibility for WIC.

WIC doesn’t even take into consideration your assets. So if you’ve been saving up for a down payment for a house, you can still qualify for WIC, even if your savings account has a nice chunk of change in it. continue reading »
